Blogpost 3 - Place Essentialism (Assess this)

Image
There are a lot of types of essentialism in this world. In this blog, the essentialism I want to focus on is the fixed views people have  on Switzerland. What comes to your mind when you think of Switzerland? For me, Switzerland has always left me an impression for its mountain, lakes, unique villages. For many people, this became the identity of Switzerland. Although, Switzerland has so much more to offer than its natural landscapes. This is a very unfortunate assumption as Switzerland actually is a rich cultural and historical country.  The problem with this simplified view of Switzerland is that it makes the country seem very one-dimensional. I will mention a few unique traits of Switzerland. Switzerland's culture is actually very diverse. You can find music, unique food, and modern art in the cities. There are a lot of festivals and cultural events that are attended by international tourists and local people. Switzerland is also known as the top financial center in the world an

Blogpost 6: Navigating the High Cost of Living in Switzerland (Assess this)

When visiting Switzerland, travelers may encounter the risk of paying a high cost of living. Switzerland consistently ranks among the world's most expensive countries, and this is a risk to the personal finance of individuals. It is very likely for tourists to encounter the impact of high cost of living as the country has a reputation for high pricing in accommodation, restaurants, activities, and even transportations. This risk of having to pay high cost of living can be managed by sticking to a budget and looking for free activities to do around the area.  When doing your budgeting for the trip to Switzerland, conduct detailed research  for the prices online or get local feedback  to know how much you will roughly spend. It is also essential not to bring the exact amount of cash as you need to have emergency funds in case anything happens.  In addition, keeping your trip flexible and skipping expensive tourist attractions will help you avoid the tourist traps they have. There are

Blogpost 5: Culture shock and confusions (Assess this)

Respecting Cultural Etiquette  In my home country, the Philippines, living expenses tends to be more affordable compared to many other countries worldwide. However, when you visit Switzerland, you might be taken aback by the higher costs, especially when it comes to rent and dining. Switzerland consistently ranks among the top three most expensive places to live, as per various articles. While it is a dream destination for many, it is crucial  to conduct thorough research and seek advice from locals to lessen the impact of culture shock and maintain your enthusiasm for travelling to  Switzerland. Another common source of confusion in Switzerland pertains to their handshake custom. Greetings can vary significantly from one country to another. In the Philippines, a sign of respect involves gently touching one's forehead to the hand of an elder. In different parts of the world, customs may involve bowing, cheek-kissing, or handshaking. Switzerland's approach is somewhat similar, b

Blogpost 4- Meaningful engagement

When traveling, we do not just have fun and eat good food. I find my travels more meaningful when I am able to learn or contribute something from the trip. Switzerland is known for their many leaders and entrepreneurs around the world. They do a lot of international trade and I believe that learning something from that would be meaningful for me as a commerce student. I am a commerce student at University of Melbourne studying Finance and Management. Switzerland is known for their Swiss banks and through going to different conference, networking events, and fun seminars, I will be able to learn lifelong lessons and gain a deeper insight of Switzerland.                                              I was raised to be open minded by my family and not just stick to things I am good at. I should explore and learn every day. Even though I am a commerce student, I believe that I do not have to stick to my disciplinary skills. I would be keen to learn different fields or ways how they do thing

Pico Iyer said in his article that his "first great joy of traveling is simply the luxury of leaving all my beliefs and certainties at home, and seeing everything I thought I knew in a different light, and from a crooked angle." I agree with his statement because for me, whenever I travel, I see a whole new perspective about various things. Gaining different perspectives is what excites me the most about traveling. This blog will be talking about the country in Europe called Switzerland. I will focus on t

When you land to a different country, the first thing you see is a big flag of the country you are visiting. In Switzerland, the flag you will see is a white cross in a red background. Fun fact, normally, the shape of the flags are rectangular. Switzerland is one of the only two flags in the world that has a square shape! I chose to talk about the national flag because it represents the whole country and tells a beautiful story about each country. During the early times, flags were made to differ itself from their competitors in the field of battle. It is known to many of us that the colors of the flag has multiple meanings that it wants to portray. Although for Switzerland, historians can not agree to why they chose those colors. The official flag of Switzerland was designed during the 1889 and it is symbolizing the security, peace, and equality of human lives. Security can be seen in Switzerland as it was ranked the 11th safest country to be in during 2019 by the global peace index.
